Nine Patch Quilt

The nine patch is a very simple style of block, composed of nine patches in alternating colors.  The simplicity of the block pattern, however, allows for a wide range of variation and complex patterns based around the nine patch block.  Quilters use colors and placement of the blocks to create more developed and complex patterns and designs in the quilt as a whole.

Color is used in this quilt to create an exciting and dynamic design.  The nine patch blocks here are set on the diagonal, a typical variation of the standard nine patch.  An offset nine patch is often pieced using one color, frequently white, for the background.  This gives the appearance of a chain.  The pink and white quilt shown as the background of the first page is an example of this, though it is worked in 25 patch blocks rather than nine patch blocks.

In this quilt, however, the quilter has placed multicolored nine patch blocks between solid yellow blocks.  The yellow and red zig zag border adds to the vibrancy of the design.  Instead of using the geometric possibilities of the nine patch to create an allover patter, the quilter here has created a colorful quilt that highlights the nine patch block as an individual block.
